Tom Murphy and Rick Yarosh of Sweethearts and Heroes, an organization of motivational speakers, will give the keynote address at the eighth annual Northern Vermont University Veterans’ Summit on March 7 at the University of Vermont’s Davis Center.

The free event, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., is open to all veterans, their adult family members and others interested in veterans’ issues. It is the only such event in Vermont and also draws veterans from nearby states. The summit was established at Lyndon State College, now NVU’s Lyndon campus. The NVU Student Veterans Association coordinates the event, hosted this year by Iraq war veteran Jon Turner of Bristol.

Murphy, of St. Albans, is a co-founder of Sweethearts and Heroes, based in Fort Ann, New York. Yarosh is a retired U.S. Army sergeant and Iraq war veteran. The summit will include remarks by White River Junction VA Medical Center Director Brett Rusch, Vermont State Colleges System Chancellor Jeb Spaulding, NVU President Elaine Collins and Student Veterans Association adviser Thom Anderson.

Breakout sessions will focus on career opportunities for veterans, yoga, the Abenaki warrior tradition, female veterans’ issues and homelessness. Representatives of Vermont’s congressional delegation, the Vermont Governor’s Veterans Advisory Council and the Colchester-based veterans’ nonprofit Josh Pallotta Fund will engage in panel discussions.

The summit will include counseling resources, assistance for homeless veterans, and veteran-services organization vendors, including Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a veterans’ employment network.

NVU-Lyndon was ranked the top military-friendly school among small public colleges and universities in the United States in Victory Media’s 2018 Military Friendly® Schools list. NVU’s Johnson campus also has been included on the list.

Pre-registration for the summit is suggested. To register, visit www.NorthernVermont.edu/VeteransSummit. For more information, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
